Furoshiki is a piece of cloth, most often square in shape, that is used to wrap, transport, protect, and decorate items among many other functions.

In recent years, it has been gaining popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to shopping bags and wrapping paper.

Furoshiki can be transformed into a bag in a matter of seconds. It can be used to organize your closet by wrapping out-of-season cloths until they are needed again. It can decorate your house by hanging on the wall, covering a couch, or wrapping a cushion. If you feel a cold breeze, you can wrap it around your neck as a shawl for warmth.

When my son was little, he used to tie one around his neck and pretend he was a superhero.

When I go picnic on a sunny day, I like to bring everything in a large furoshiki. Put it on a picnic table, untie the furoshiki and it becomes an instant table cloth (or a picnic mat if you are sitting on grass). When you are done and ready to go, just wrap everything back again for easy transporting.

It is surprising and exciting how a piece of fabric can be so multifunctional and versatile.
